The Country

France is the largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the third-largest in Europe as a whole. It is a unitary semi- presidential republic with its capital in Paris. France is the most popular tourist destination in the world with over 75 million visitors annually. It has both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The landscape is diverse, with mountains in the east and south, including the Alpine peak of Mont Blanc which is Western Europe’s highest point. Due to favorable conditions for grape growing in the south, France is the world’s largest wine producer. Also, the country’s wines are rated among the best in the world.

The City

Lille is a city in the North of France. It is the principal city of the Lille Métropole, the fourth-largest metropolitan area in France after those of Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Lille is situated in French Flanders, on the Deûle River, near France’s border with Belgium. It is the capital of the Nord-Pas de Calais region and the prefecture of the Nord department. The city of Lille had a population of 226,827 as recorded by the 2009 census. However, Lille Métropole, which also includes Roubaix, Tourcoing and numerous suburban communities, had a population of 1,091,438.

Student life

EDHEC is proud of the numerous student associations it offers and the students are proud of their association’s success. The Lille campus offers an exciting student-life filled with entertainment, culture and variety. It houses numerous amenities including 2,000m2 of student association premises, three restaurants, a 3,200m2 sports building, 40 classrooms, 20 lecture theatres, a 750- seat auditorium and a student residence. Also, Lille is one of the top students cities in France with over 100 000 students.

The EDHEC Nice Campus is located in an elegant and modern complex overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the vicinity of the Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport. It consists of 13 amphitheaters (one with 300 seats), lecture halls, a Thomson Reuters trading room, an e-learning room and many more excellent student facilities. A new extension was opened in September 2013. This brand new extra building includes extensive dedicated spaces, specifically designed for students to work in groups or alone. It also features a new library, a gym, a music room and facilities which aim to that contribute to the overall satisfaction and wellbeing of our students.

Nice’s origins can be found among the Gallo-Roman ruins of Cimiez, in the hills up the boulevard de Cimiez from downtown. Cimiez also contains a monastery and some museums, but nowadays, most of the city’s inhabitants live closer to sea level. Nice was part of the Italian Duchy of Savoia and then the Kingdom of Sardinia until it was ceded to France in 1860 by a rigged ballot, against the population’s will. The ancient local language is Nissart, but of course, everyone speaks French. Don’t assume everyone you encounter will speak English — an effort at French will always be appreciated.
