I am Lana Sambol, a rhythmic gymnast with a third-category ranking. I have regularly competed in world championships and proudly represented Croatia at the Universiade. Throughout my sports career, I faced the challenge of balancing training, competitions, and education. I first heard about the Zagreb School of Economics and Management from a friend who is also an athlete and a student there. I was drawn to the opportunity to study while focusing on my sports career, as well as the flexibility the university offers to athletes.
I chose ZSEM because it allowed me to adapt my studies to my sports commitments. Unlike high school, where I had to attend classes regularly and take exams almost every week, here I could balance my academic and athletic responsibilities. Exam periods allowed me to take exams after the competition season, giving me the flexibility needed to compete at a high level.
My professors were understanding and offered additional exam dates when I had to miss classes due to sports commitments. Most professors and assistants were open to communication and willing to help. However, when I did not receive responses to my emails, Associate Dean Karmela Aleksić-Maslać stepped in to provide the necessary support.
During the competition season, my typical day was fully dedicated to training, which lasted from 9 AM to 6 PM. During that time, I rarely had the opportunity to attend lectures, but when my training sessions were shorter, I managed to adjust my schedule and attend classes. Studying and preparing for exams was challenging, especially when I was traveling for competitions. However, I always found solutions through discussions with my coach and the university.
At the end of 2024, I retired from competitive sports, and in 2025, for the first time, I became solely a student. My focus shifted entirely to my studies, but I remained active in sports as a coach and judge. Although the knowledge I gained at ZSEM may not be directly applicable to my sports career, I believe it provides me with a strong foundation for the future.
I would highly recommend ZSEM to young athletes as a great option for balancing education and sports. The faculty and professors are very supportive, allowing students to dedicate themselves to their sport while managing their academic obligations when their schedules allow. With good organization and determination, everything is possible!
I am still unsure about my career path after graduation and do not see myself in sports management. However, I believe that by the end of my studies, I will discover my true professional direction and gain a clear vision of what I want to do. I am confident that the experience, discipline, and work ethic I developed through sports will help me succeed in whatever comes next.
