A Year in Rome: Language, Art and Lasting Friendships

First Steps – Motivation for the Exchange

My name is Maria Kadija and I spent one academic year as an Erasmus student at Sapienza University of Rome. I chose this exchange because I wanted to broaden my horizons, improve my Italian language skills, and immerse myself in the city’s art and culture while growing personally and academically. The decision was also inspired by fellow students and mentors who encouraged me to take this opportunity.

1

Arriving in Rome – First Impressions

From the beginning I was fascinated by Rome’s lively atmosphere, the constant movement of the city and the chance to meet new people. Surrounded by art, history and beautiful churches, my everyday life felt inspiring and full of discovery.

2

Unforgettable Experiences in Italy

What I enjoyed most was spending time with friends and exploring the city – walking through its streets, enjoying the food, and discovering places that made Rome feel like home. Traveling also gave me unforgettable moments, especially a trip to the Dolomites. Surrounded by mountains and standing in the snow under a clear sky, I felt a sense of freedom and peace that gave me new strength and perspective. These experiences not only created lasting memories but also reminded me how important it is to dare to explore and embrace experiences that change us from within.

Growth

My Erasmus year in Rome strengthened my independence, adaptability and international perspective. It gave me valuable academic and cultural insights that shaped both my studies and my personal development.

Future Plans

My goal is to have more experiences like this and broaden my horizons even further. I want to continue building an international path while carrying with me the friendships and memories from Rome. I am grateful to ZŠEM for making this experience possible and encourage future students to use these opportunities to study abroad, discover new cultures and grow both personally and professionally.
