Professional basketball player and student at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management (ZSEM), Valerija Prtenjača knew from the very beginning of her academic journey that she wanted a study program that could keep pace with the demands of professional sport while also providing a strong foundation for her future beyond the court. Aware that a sports career has a limited time span, Valerija viewed choosing a university program as a long-term investment in knowledge, stability, and professional flexibility.
That is precisely why she chose the Economics and Management program at ZSEM, which enabled her to develop business thinking, acquire practical knowledge, and receive the support needed to successfully balance athletic and academic responsibilities.
“Alongside my sports career, I wanted to build strong foundations for my future beyond the court,” Valerija emphasizes.
Valerija describes studying at ZSEM as demanding, yet an exceptionally enriching experience. From the very beginning of her studies, she was faced with high academic standards, an interactive approach to learning, and the expectation of continuous engagement. Such an environment further motivated her to develop discipline, responsibility, and independence – skills she had already acquired through sports, but which gained a new and broader dimension during her studies.
She particularly highlights the professors’ professional approach and their understanding of the specific circumstances of professional athletes. Flexibility and open communication enabled her to balance competitions, training sessions, and academic responsibilities without compromising the quality of her education.
During her studies, Valerija developed a range of competencies that go beyond the academic framework. Time management, effective communication, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure became an integral part of her daily functioning – both in sports and beyond.
The connection between sports and the business world proved to be one of the key advantages of her studies. The knowledge gained through her courses is something Valerija also applies on the court, where leadership, responsibility, and strategic thinking are just as important as physical preparation.
One of the elements that particularly helped Valerija balance professional sports and her studies was the support of the teaching staff. The professors showed understanding for the challenges that come with professional athletics and, through open communication, helped find solutions during more demanding periods.
This approach further strengthened her sense of security and belonging within the academic community, allowing Valerija to fully focus on her personal development without feelings of pressure or sacrifice.
Based on her own experience, Valerija advises prospective students to believe in their ambitions and be ready to invest in themselves. Studying at ZSEM requires seriousness, commitment, and responsibility, but at the same time it offers strong support and numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth.
