„I wasn’t sure which path to take, but I knew I wanted an experience that would truly prepare me for the future.”
This thought best describes the journey of Zemir Mašala, a student at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management (ZSEM), who began his education in Sarajevo and continued it in Zagreb. At 18, he moved to Croatia with his family, still undecided about which program to pursue. On the recommendation of a friend, Zemir chose to enroll at ZSEM.
From the very beginning, Zemir was looking for a program that would offer more than just theory. What drew him to ZSEM was the focus on practical experience, working on real projects, and the opportunity to collaborate with professors who have extensive experience in the business world. “The program was demanding and dynamic, but that’s exactly what allowed me to immediately apply the knowledge I gained in real-world situations,” Zemir emphasizes.
As a Dean’s list student, Zemir Mašala had the opportunity to represent ZSEM at international conferences in Riyadh and participate in the BIP (Blended Intensive Program – short mobility program) in Warsaw, which he considers an extremely valuable experience. He completed his first professional internship at a digital marketing company in Zagreb, and his second, six-month internship in Amsterdam as part of an Erasmus+ professional program. These opportunities allowed him to develop professional skills and gain hands-on experience in an international business environment.
Zemir actively participated in organizing various student events, which allowed him to further develop his communication, teamwork, and organizational skills. “Being involved in event organization doesn’t just provide experience – it also offers the chance to build a network of contacts that is invaluable in the business world,” Zemir says.
Among the courses that left a lasting impression on him, Zemir highlights Business Communication with Professor Zdravka Biočina. “It wasn’t just about theory – I learned how to communicate clearly and professionally, manage meetings, and present ideas,” Zemir explains. The course helped him build confidence in public speaking and everyday business communication.
Studying at ZSEM allowed Zemir to develop analytical and strategic thinking, teamwork, problem-solving, as well as organization and time management skills. Through projects and real-world assignments, he gained confidence in decision-making and navigating professional environments. “Every project and internship I completed was a test of my abilities and an opportunity to learn something new,” he adds.
Although Zemir personally did not participate in a student exchange, he often heard from peers how studying abroad provides an unforgettable experience and significant professional growth. Opportunities like these, combined with a practice-oriented program and high-quality professors, make ZSEM an excellent choice for students seeking more than a traditional academic experience.
Zemir emphasizes that studying at ZSEM is a key investment in personal and professional growth. “The school allows you to connect your knowledge with the real world and gain experience that is recognized and valued not only in Croatia but internationally,” Zemir concludes.
