In a world where career paths are becoming less linear and more shaped by interdisciplinary knowledge and global perspectives, the story of Ivana Sabolek—a PhD holder and MBA student at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management (ZSEM) from Čakovec—is a powerful example of how science, management, and social engagement can be interwoven into a meaningful and impactful career.
Born in Čakovec, Ivana began her education at Josip Slavenski High School before enrolling at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, where she graduated in 2018. That same year, she also completed the Academy for Political Development, opening the door to the world of public policy and social responsibility.
“Veterinary medicine was always my first choice. But on the other hand, gaining political knowledge gave me a broader perspective on the role of the profession in society. I learned how scientific foundations can contribute to the development of better public policies. By the end of my studies, I felt proud, but also excited, because I knew the real opportunities and challenges were just beginning,” Ivana recalls.
A pivotal moment in her professional development came through a professional training experience at the European Parliament in Brussels, where she gained important international exposure and developed an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving.
“During my internship at the European Parliament, I worked on preparing analyses and reports related to public policy, especially in the fields of environmental protection and public health. I focused on topics such as the circular economy, the environmental impact of pesticides, antimicrobial resistance, and animal welfare, particularly improving conditions in animal farming. That experience helped me understand how scientific knowledge can be translated into tangible legislative proposals. It also showed me the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge in creating sustainable and responsible policies,” Ivana shares.
Upon returning to Croatia, she began working as a teaching assistant at her alma mater, in the Department of Hygiene, Animal Behavior, and Welfare. Her daily responsibilities include lecturing, working with students, preparing scientific papers, and participating in research projects—especially those focusing on animal behavior and welfare and the influence of environmental factors on animal health.
In 2019, Ivana enrolled in the doctoral program in Veterinary Science, and in 2022 she completed the United Nations Academy, further expanding her understanding of global sustainability and science challenges. Recognizing the importance of human resources and leadership in academia and research, she joined the MBA program in Human Resources Management at ZSEM in 2023.
“Balancing the final phase of my PhD with an intensive MBA program was a major challenge. There were moments of doubt, fatigue, and feeling overwhelmed, but the support of professors, the motivating environment and practical knowledge at ZŠEM, along with the encouragement from colleagues at my home faculty, were key to maintaining my motivation and perseverance,” Ivana emphasizes
The MBA program gave her concrete knowledge in management, teamwork, and strategic thinking, offering her a new perspective on her own career.
“The MBA was a completely different world—a new reality, very different from the academic environment I was used to. Honestly, I initially felt uncertain, wondering whether I could keep up with the pace or adapt to a different mindset and way of working. But that uncertainty quickly turned into motivation. From the very beginning, I was immersed in an environment that encouraged idea exchange, critical thinking, and solving real business challenges. We worked on numerous business cases, decision-making simulations, and group projects that demanded collaboration, fast decision-making, clear communication, and an ability to recognize each team member’s contribution,” she explains.
Ivana was especially enriched by the perspectives of colleagues from various industries. That diversity broadened her professional horizons and helped her view challenges beyond the scope of the scientific community. In addition to the knowledge gained, she also forged new friendships that deeply enriched her experience.
By defending her doctoral thesis in September last year, Ivana not only concluded an important chapter of her life but also stepped into a new one—one where she aims to merge veterinary science, academia, public policy, and management.
ZSEM played a crucial role in this transformation by providing tools, knowledge, and an empowering environment for future leaders. In Ivana’s case, this meant redefining career ambitions and moving toward roles where she can truly make an impact—whether in scientific institutions, international organizations, or public administration.
Ivana plans to continue developing in a direction that connects science, education, and strategic management. In the long run, she aspires to work on projects that improve animal welfare, human wellbeing, and the systems in which we all operate.
“My story is one of interdisciplinarity, challenges, and personal growth. I hope it will motivate those who are uncertain—because with the right support, knowledge, and determination, anything is possible,” says Ivana Sabolek.
