The Country

The United Mexican States is a federal republic composed of 32 federal entities: 31 states and 1 federal district. It is bordered on the north by the United States of America; on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; on the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and on the east by the Gulft of Mexico. With an estimated population of over 113 million it is most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world. Mexico has one of the world’s most diverse weather systems. TheTropic of Cancer effectively divides the country into temperate and tropical zones. The most notable attractions are the Meso-American ruins, cultural festivals, colonial cities, nature reserves and the beach resorts. The nation’s temperate climate and unique culture – a fusion of the European and the Meso-American – make Mexico an attractive destination.

The City – Mexico City

Mexico is the capital of United Mexican States and is the country’s largest city as well as its most important political, cultural, educational and financial center. It is located in the Valley of Mexico, a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico. The 2009 estimated population for the city proper was around 8.84 million people. According to the most recent definition agreed upon by the federal and state governments, the Greater Mexico City population is 21.2 million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world. Mexico City has a subtropical highland climate and the average annual temperature varies from 12 to 16 °C (54 to 61 °F).

The City – Guadalajara

Guadalajara, “The Pearl of the West,”Capital of Jalisco and Mexico’s 2nd largest city and is one of the largest urban centers in North America. The city has deep colonial roots which are evident everywhere around the city. The city center is laid out like a cross, which consists of the Guadalajara cathedral and 4 surrounding plazas. The temperatures throughout the year range from lows of around 68 degrees to highs around 92 degrees during the summer. Guadalajara is the birthplace of Mariachi music, and the city hosts an annual Mariachi bash in September. There are plenty of clubs and venues, where a whole array of different varieties of music are played. Guadalajara has plenty of activities and things to do around the city. Just like most other urban cities, there are plenty of theatres and museums throughout the city. The arts are very important to the city, and have been integral to the Gualajara’s rich history.

Guadalajara, the second largest city in Mexico and birthplace of the mariachi band, is a bustling metropolitan city that is alive with parks, monuments and historical 16th century buildings. Guadalajara tours offer the visitor a diverse cultural experience beyond a typical resort town. This colonial city is also famous for tequila, an essential ingredient for Margarita drinks, which is distilled in the nearby town. The best way to see the historic city center of Guadalajara and downtown is by foot. A”walking tour” map is free or you can hire a horse drawn carriage called “calandria” that have several locations in the vicinity. Chapala is 45 minutes from Guadalajara and is a quiet, picturesque town, where the locals go on weekends. There are restaurants and shops where you can spend the day. Although Mexico City is renowned for its massive and traffic, travelers who venture to the capital of Mexico will be rewarded with some impressive sights and sounds. As one of the largest cities in the world, there are museums, archaeological sites, historical buildings and bustling markets to occupy a visitor for months on end.

  • Metropolitan Cathedral – the enormous cathedral on the North side of the Zocalo was built over a period of 250 years and has a mixture of architectural styles.
  • National Palace – the main attraction here is Diego Rivera’s murals depicting thousands of years of Mexican history.
  • Xochimilco – the chinampas, or “floating gardens” of the Aztecs were an ingenious agricultural technique to create arable land on the lake.
  • Teotihuacan – it is archaeological site where you can see the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, walk along the Avenue of the Dead, climb the Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon only
