Argentina (officially the Argentine Republic) is a federal republic located in southeastern South America. Today Argentina is different from most other countries in South America because it is mainly dominated by a large middle class that is heavily influenced by European culture as 97% of its population is European- most of whom are of Spanish and Italian descent. Today the one of the most important sectors of Argentina’s economy is its industry and approximately one fourth of its workers are employed in manufacturing. Argentina’s major industries include: chemical and petrochemical, food production, leather and textiles. Energy production and mineral resources are also important to Argentina’s economy. Like its terrain, Argentina’s climate varies as well although most of the country is considered temperate with a small arid portion in the southeast. However, Argentina’s southwestern portion is very cold and dry and is a Sub-Antarctic climate.
Buenos Aires can be a lot to take in. The city is very well known for its fast-paced rhythm, its ethnic diversity and its eclectic architecture or urban design. It is not easy to wrap one’s mind around the people and the local identity, the numerous traditions, Argentina’s complex history, the greatly contrasting urban scenery, the vast cultural and artistic offering. The people from Buenos Aires are known as porteños because the city is a port. It played a key role in the development of the country, and is related to the city’s style in such characteristic things as the tango. For the most part, porteñosare considered to be cultivated and sophisticated. Living in BA is an interesting and intense experience, as well as challenge.

Buenos Aires is one of the largest cities in Latin America. The center is truly the city’s “downtown”, and while most residents live in outer barrios, everyone comes here, either to work, to eat, or to find entertainment. The Plaza de Mayo, on which sit the Casa Rosada and the
Catedral Metropolitana, is the pulsating center of the country. Many important historical events have been celebrated or protested here. From Buenos Aires there are many possibilities for trips to nearby small towns in the pampas, such as San Antonio de Areco, north along the Rio Paraná to Tigre and the delta and its islands, or east along the coast as far as the provincial capital, La Plata. Most of the attractions can be seen in a day, but if you fancy a longer break from the city bustle, a good range of accommodations is available.
