The Country

The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy, in which the House of Orange, currently headed by King Willem Alexander, plays a largely symbolic role. However, there is great public enthusiasm for the traditions associated with the monarchy, such as King’s Day on 27 April, when the whole country takes to the streets decked out in orange for a gigantic party. Much the same is true when the national football team does well, such as the last World Cup. The Dutch combine history and traditional culture with innovation, modernism and an international outlook. Thanks to successful export, industries and major multinationals like Philips, ING, Unilever and Akzo Nobel, the Netherlands is more important than the size on the map would suggest. The Netherlands has long been open to people of non-Dutch origin, historically attracted by freedom of thought and religion as well as commerce. Today it is home to over 190 different nationalities. This cultural diversity has made it a place where knowledge, ideas and cultures from all over the world come together. Another distinctive characteristic of the Dutch is their openness in personal interaction and direct manner of acting and speaking.

The City

Tilburg is a landlocked municipality and a city in the Netherlands, located in the southern province of Noord-Brabant. Tilburg municipality also includes the villages of Berkel-Enschot and Udenhout. With a population of 210,289, it is the second largest city of Noord-Brabant, and the sixth largest city of the Netherlands. Its metropolitan area, which includes Goirle, has 300,249 inhabitants. The city of Tilburg hosts many festivals, such as Incubate, Festival Mundial (world culture), Stranger Than Paranoia (jazz), Tilburg Students Festival, and Roadburn Festival. 013 is a modern pop-centre. Paradox is a club for experimental jazz and improvised music. Fontys University of Applied Sciences started a pop-academy in the beginning of the 21st century, and students often perform on local stages. A lot of parks and forests provide people from Tilburg area for recreation.

The Leijpark and the Reeshofpark are the largest among the parks in Tilburg. The Leijpark is famous for Festival Mundial and lies next to the St. Elisabeth hospital and a monastery, the Cenakel. The Reeshofpark is created in the late 1990s, including some restaurants opened in 2011. Some older parks include the Wilhelminapark in Oud-Noord, is built on the square of the former herd place Veldhoven. Tilburg offers, in comparison to other top-ten cities in the Netherlands the most forest area. Interesting fact is that Vincent Van Gogh was born and raised in Tilburg.

Tilburg is the biggest city in the province of Drenthe, the Netherlands. Although Emmen is not a particularly interesting destination for travellers, it’s well known in the Netherlands for its biggest attraction: the zoo. Emmen has two train stations, the central one and one in the south of town (EmmenZuid). To get to Amsterdam board an intercity service to Zwolle and change trains there. The journey will take about 2.5 hours. Many bus lines connect Emmen to all destinations in the area. You’ll find the main bus terminal across the street from the central train station.
