France is the largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the third-largest in Europe as a whole. It is a unitary semi- presidential republic with its capital in Paris. France is the most popular tourist destination in the world with over 75 million visitors annually. It has both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The landscape is diverse, with mountains in the east and south, including the Alpine peak of Mont Blanc which is Western Europe’s highest point. Due to favorable conditions for grape growing in the south, France is the world’s largest wine producer. Also, the country’s wines are rated among the best in the world.
Nancy is a city in the north-eastern French department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, and formerly the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, and then the French province of the same name. Nancy was burned in 1218 at the end of the War of Succession of Champagne, and conquered by Emperor Frederick II, then rebuilt in stone over the next few centuries. Place Stanislas, a large square built between March 1752 and November 1755 by Stanislaw I, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The river Marne–Rhine Canal runs through the city, parallel to the river Meurthe. Nancy is surrounded by hills that are about 150 m higher than the city center.
