Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade

The Faculty of Economics was founded in 1937 as the Graduate School for Economy and Trade.

Since then, the Faculty has grown into the most eminent scientific and educational institution in the field of economic sciences in our country. More than 1000 students are enrolled each year at the undergraduate studies. To the present, over 42000 students have graduated from the Faculty since its foundation, more than 2800 Magisterium / Master’s degrees have been issued and around 740 PhD dissertations have been defended. The teaching process is managed by 132 professors and associates, together with 25 foreign visiting professors. There are 76 members of administrative staff.

The Country

Serbia, officially the Republic of Serbia, is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, covering the southern part of the Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. The capital of Serbia, Belgrade, is among Europe’s oldest cities and one of the largest in Southeast Europe. Tourism is mainly focused on the mountains and spas of the country, which are mostly visited by domestic tourists, as well as Belgrade which is preferred choice of foreign tourists. The most famous mountain resorts are Kopaonik, Stara Planina, and Zlatibor. City-break and conference tourism is developed in Belgrade (which was visited by 517,401 foreign tourists in 2013, more than a half of all international visits to the country) and to a lesser degree Novi Sad.

The City

Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Its name translates to White city. The city has a population of 1.23 million, while over 1.65 million people live in its metro area (which encompass administrative limits of City of Belgrade). One of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinča culture, evolved within the Belgrade area in the 6th millennium BC. As a strategic location, the city was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times. Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia (in various forms of governments) from its creation in 1918, to its final dissolution in 2006. Belgrade has a special administrative status within Serbia and it is one of five statistical regions of Serbia. Its metropolitan territory is divided into 17 municipalities, each with its own local council. It covers 3.6% of Serbia’s territory, and 22.5% of the country’s population lives in the city. The city has been awarded many titles, and the nomination for European Capital of Culture 2020.

Student Life

Every student at Faculty of Economics is part of the Students’ Union that helps students get involved, make friends and make the most of their time at University by organizing various activities.

Accommodation

The University of Belgrade does not provide direct accommodation for foreign students. Students usually live in private residences, either their families or sharing an apartment with other students.

Travel Opportunities

Belgrade city core is not too big. Everything between Kalemegdan, Knez Mihajlova street and Skadarska street is best viewed by foot. Other than that, it is recommended to use other means of transportation. Note that many of Belgrade’s museums are closed on Monday. It may be wise to check before making a visit. Also from Belgrade you can visit other parts of Europe, Belgrade has good connections.
