The Country

Finland is a land of interesting contrasts, such as the four seasons, the Midnight Sun and the winter darkness, urban and rural, East and West. As you look out from the plane, the first impression you may have is that there are a lot of trees an endless carpet of forest, with many lakes and small towns in between. It’s kind of a surprise when you land in

Helsinki to find that the airport is so modern and efficient. Not a polar bear in sight. It’s truly amazing how uniquely exotic each season can be. Four times a year, nature changes its uniform completely – color, light, temperature, sounds and smells. Everything changes in a way that happens nowhere else. Finland has a highly industrialized mixed economy with a per capita output equal to that of other European economies such as France, Germany, Belgium or the UK. The largest sector of the economy is services, followed by manufacturing and refining. The Finns are considered to be cool – a bit quiet and reserved. However, they are actually warm, friendly, hospitable and especially honest people once you get to know them.

The City

Jyväskylä is a city and municipality in Central Finland in the western part of the Finnish Lakeland. It is the
largest city in Central Finland. Jyväskylä is a prominent school and university city with 40.000 students during the academic year. Every 4th person that you pass in Jyväskylä is a student. The city is very dynamic. Take a look at the sports and cultural activities, not to mention restaurants and cafés. Jyväskylä is easy to reach and simple to move around in. In Jyväskylä and its immediate surroundings you can enjoy the beautiful Finnish nature as well as the activities of a lively urban centre. Enjoy the city as a modern urban area, as a lively arena for events or a cultural stage with a long, proud history.
