University of Manitoba

University of Manitoba is western Canada’s first university.

Founded more than 135 years ago, and located in the heart of the country. They are the region’s largest and only research-intensive university offering over 90 degrees, diplomas, and certificates – more than 60 at the undergraduate level including professional disciplines such as medicine, law, and engineering. They have over 29,000 students, 8,500 faculty and staff, and 190,000 alumni. Nearly 11.2 per cent of their current students are international, representing close to 104 countries. The University of Manitoba is a coeducational, nondenominational, government-supported institution. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

The Country

Canada is a country in North America consisting of 10 provinces and 3 territories. Located in the northern part of the continent, it extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean. At 9.98 million square kilometers in total, Canada is the world’s second-largest country by total area, and its common border with the United States is the world’s longest land border shared by the same two countries. Canada has around 31,700 large lakes, more than any other country, containing much of the world’s fresh water. There are also fresh-water glaciers in the Canadian Rockies and the Coast Mountains.

The City

Winnipeg is one of the most affordable cities in Canada and is full of opportunities. As the 2010 Culture Capital of Canada, Winnipeg is a city where people can experience a wide array of world-class arts and culture on every corner. It is also home to a professional baseball team, the Winnipeg Goldeyes, a National Hockey League (NHL) team, the Winnipeg Jets, and a professional football team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who will soon play in their new stadium located on the U of M campus. Travel opportunities

Places which you need to see:

• Brandon – the second-largest city in the province, after Winnipeg.
• Thompson – the largest city in Northern Manitoba, and the third largest in the whole province.
• Steinbach – For tourists, it is most notable as a town founded by Mennonites, and while the city is largely modern, traces of Steinbach’s Mennonite past can still be found. A few conservative Mennonite groups still make the city home.
• Churchill – small town of just under 1,000 residents, is located on the western shore of Hudson Bay. Some of the town’s most famous inhabitants are polar bears, this of course leading to its famous nickname, Polar Bear Capital of the World. Humans first arrived in Churchill around 1000 A.D. (the Thule Peoples) with the first Europeans arriving around the 1600s with promises of the fur trade. Churchill has now evolved from an industrial fur trading centre to a ecotourism driven community.
