The University of Louisville (UofL) is a public university in Louisville, Kentucky. When founded in 1798, it was the first city-owned public university in the United States.

The University of Louisville offers bachelor’s degrees in 70 fields of study, master’s degrees in 78, and doctorate degrees in 22. U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 edition ranked University of Louisville’s undergraduate program 160th among national universities. The university has three campuses in the Louisville area, the Belknap, the Health Science, and the Shelby. It also has an International Campus in Panama City, Panama, as well as various satellite facilities in the state of Kentucky and abroad.

Louisville is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the 30th-most populous city in the United States. It is one of two cities in Kentucky designated as first-class, with the other being the state’s second-largest city of Lexington. As of the 2010 census, Louisville Metro held a population of 741,096. Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky, with 17.1% of the state’s total population as of 2010. Louisville today is home to dozens of companies and organizations across several industrial classifications. However, the underpinning of the city’s economy since it earliest days has been the shipping and cargo industries. Its strategic location at the Falls of the Ohio, as well as its unique position in the central United States (within one day’s road travel to 60% of the cities in the continental U.S.) make it an ideal location for the transfer of cargo along its route to other destinations.. Recently, Louisville has emerged as a major center for the health care and medical sciences industries. It has been central to advancements in heart and hand surgery, as well as cancer treatment. Additionally, Louisville is a major center of the American whiskey industry, with about one-third of all bourbon coming from Louisville.

With more than 100 student organizations to choose from, the University of Louisville has an organization for everyone. Louisville itself has many attractions, Metro has 122 city parks covering more than 13,000 acres (53 km2).
