Stuttgart is spread across a variety of hills (many of them vineyards), valleys and parks – unusual for a German city and often a source of surprise to visitors who primarily associate the city with its industrial reputation as the ‘cradle of the automobile’. Stuttgart has the status of Stadtkreis, a type of self- administrating urban county. It is also the seat of the state legislature, the regional parliament, the local council and the Protestant State Church in Württemberg as well as one of the two co-seats of the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rottenburg- Stuttgart.
The General Students’ Committee, or AStA, is the legally-entitled representative body for students at the University and also acts as such in different panels. It scope of responsibility includes the various interests of students in terms of social support, the promotion of the intellectual, musical and sporting interests of students and the further development of inter-regional and international student cooperation. In Hohenheim, AStA is sub-divided into the elected representative body and the AStA office, which runs the sports program and Unimusik. Learn more about the activities of the AStA on the AStA homepage.

Stuttgarters are amazingly friendly people who will forgive you if German isn’t your first or second (or any) language. If you do speak German well: beware that many people speak the local Schwäbisch dialect natively which may somewhat affect their standard German – which however everyone can speak. They love to practice other languages (especially English) and will try to help you. Stuttgart is a big city with a small-town atmosphere.
Germany is also filled with beautiful castles. The Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited castles in Germany and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Interesting destinations for weekend trips are France (the Alsace region), Switzerland and Lake Constance. Trains are a great and easy way to get around in Germany. You can book tickets online.
