I BOLOGNA01

The origins of the University of Bologna go way back, and it is considered to be the oldest university in the Western world.

Its history is intertwined with that of the great names of science and literature, it is a keystone and a point of reference for European culture. The image of the University of Bologna is the result of all that the University produces and the way in which it communicates; it is also the result of the perception its wide and diversified audience has of the activities of the Alma Mater.

The Country

Italy is a country in Southern Europe. It is acknowledged as the birthplace of Western culture. Not surprisingly, it is also home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. High art and monuments are to be found everywhere around the country. It is also famous worldwide for its delicious cuisine, its trendy fashion industry, luxury sports cars and motorcycles, diverse regional cultures and dialects, as well as for its beautiful coast, alpine lakes and mountain ranges (the Alps and Apennines). No wonder it is often nicknamed the Bel Paese (the Beautiful Country).

Two independent mini-states are surrounded entirely by Italy: San Marino and Vatican City. While technically not part of the European Union, both of these states are also part of the Schengen Area and the European Monetary Union (EMU). Apart from different police uniforms, there is no evident transition from these states and Italy’s territory, and the currency is the same. Italian is also the official language in both countries.

The City

Bologna is a historical city, with around 380,000 inhabitants. Although it is well known by Italians, it is less so among foreign visitors. Little English is spoken by its residents. It is the capital and largest city of Emilia-Romagna (a region in northern Italy). Bologna is famed for the oldest university in the Western world, lively student population, exquisite food, typical brick terracotta-roofed architecture and porticos, theatre and nightlife. Today Bologna is noticeably a student town, lively and entertaining, and is viewed as one of the most forward-thinking cities in Europe. In fact, one in four people walking the streets of Bologna are college students. Fewer than 500 of these students are Americans, which makes Bologna a true cultural immersion for students wanting a genuine Italian encounter. Compared to Florence, where more than 4,000 Americans live and study each year, and in contrast to the 7,000 Americans to be found in Rome, Bologna remains one of Italy’s best-kept secrets.
