Texas Tech University, often referred to as Texas Tech, Tech, or TTU, is a public research university in Lubbock, Texas United States.

Established on February 10, 1923, and originally known as Texas Technological College, it is the leading institution of the four-institution Texas Tech University System. The university’s student enrollment is the sixth-largest in the state of Texas, as of the Fall 2014 semester. The university shares its campus with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, making it the only campus in Texas to house an undergraduate university, law school, and medical school at the same location. The university offers degrees in more than 150 courses of study through 13 colleges and hosts 60 research centers and institutes. accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university offers 150 Texas Tech University is bachelor’s, 104 master’s, and 59 doctoral degree programs.

The Princeton Review ranked Texas Tech among the 117 best colleges in the Western United States in its 2009 edition. The 2015 U.S. News & World Report rankings listed the university at 156th nationally and 84th amongst public schools. The 2013Shanghai Jiao Tong Rankingsplaced Texas Tech University at 401 worldwide.

The country

Texas is the second most populous and second largest state of the United States of America. Geographically located in the south central part of the country, Texas shares an international borderwithMexicoto the south and borders theU.S. states of New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2) and a growing population of over 26.9 million residents (July 2014). The large size of Texas and its location at the intersection of multipleclimate zones gives the state highly variable weather. Snow falls multiple times each winter in the Panhandle and mountainous areas of West Texas, once or twice a year in North Texas, and once every few years in Central and East Texas. Maximum temperatures in the summer months average from the 80s °F (26 °C) in the mountains of West Texas and on Galveston Island to around 100 °F (38 °C) in the Rio Grande Valley, but most areas of Texas see consistent summer high temperatures in the 90 °F (32 °C) range.

The city

Lubbock is the city located in the northwestern part of the state, a region known historically and geographically as the Llano Estacado and ecologically is part of the southern end of the High Plains. According to a 2014 Census estimate, Lubbock had a population of 243,839, making it the 85th most populous city in the United States of America and the 11th most populous city in the state of Texas. The city is the economic center of the Lubbock metropolitan area, which had an estimated 2014 population of 305,644. The Lubbock area is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world.
