Sophia University is a private Jesuit research university in Japan, with its main campus located near Yotsuya station, in an area of Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward.

It is ranked as one of the top private universities in Japan. It takes its name from the Greek Sophia meaning “wisdom”. The Japanese name, Jōchi Daigaku, literally means “University of Higher Wisdom”. It has an exchange program with many universities throughout the world, including Yale University, Sogang University and the University of Hong Kong. The university was a men’s university in the past, but at present admits women; the proportion of men to women is now more or less equal. Sophia’s alumni are referred to as “Sophians”; they include the 79th Japanese Prime Minister of Japan, Morihiro Hosokawa, a number of politicians
represented in the National Diet of Japan, and professors at various institutions. Over the years, the university has created an original global network that allows researchers and students from overseas to teach and study in Japan, and Japanese researchers and students to do same abroad. Sophia University has offered English-medium programs for more than 60
years. Reflecting the high regard in which its track record as a pioneer in global education
is held, the University was recently chosen for a series of subsidy programs being implemented by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,Science and Technology to internationalize universities in Japan, includeing the Top Global Universities Project and the Global 30 Project. These programs are helping to further strengthen the University’s efforts to boost the global
competency of our students. At the same time, agreements with 206 overseas universities in 42 countiries ensure the dynamic mobility of our students. Over 1,500 international students are studying at Sophia from around the world, and are fostering an internatinalized campus culture. The univeresity is also renowned for encouraging Japanese students to study abroad with a broad spectrum of programs. Both incoming and outgoing students will discover how education really comes to life in an international context at Sophia. Here you can see the promotional video of University.

The Country

Japan is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea
of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The characters that make up Japan’s name mean “sun-origin”, which is why Japan is sometimes referred to as the “Land of the
Rising Sun”. Japan is an archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest islands are Honshu,
Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which together comprise about ninety-seven percent of Japan’s land area. Japan has the world’s tenth-largest population, with over 126 million people.

The City

Tokyo officially Tokyo Metropolis, is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, and is both the capital and most populous city of Japan. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. Tokyo was ranked first in the “Best overall experience” category of TripAdvisor’s World City Survey (the city also ranked first in the following categories: “helpfulness of locals”, “nightlife”, “shopping”, “local public transportation” and “cleanliness of streets”). There are four national parks in Tokyo Prefecture, including the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, which includes all of the Izu Islands. Tokyo has the largest metropolitan economy in the world. According to a study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Tokyo urban area (37.8 million people) had a total GDP of US$1.9 trillion in 2012 (at purchasing power parity), which topped that list. 51 of the companies listed on the Fortune Global 500 are based in Tokyo, almost twice that of the second-placed city (Paris). Tokyo was rated by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the most
expensive (highest cost-of-living) city in the world for 14 years in a row ending in 2006. Many different festivals occur throughout Tokyo. As the largest population center in Japan and the site of the country’s largest broadcasters and studios, Tokyo is frequently the setting for many Japanese movies, television shows, animated series (anime), web comics, and comic books (manga). In the kaiju (monster movie) genre, landmarks of Tokyo are routinely destroyed by giant monsters such as Godzilla and Gamera.

Accommodation

Sophia University has several off-campus dormitories and offers affiliated housing options. For inquiries and application, contact the dormitory/organization directly. Since the Sophia campus is located in the heart of Tokyo, the cost of living near campus is very high. As reasonable housing is located in the suburbs, students should expect a 30-90 min. commuting time to campus.

Travel Opportunities

Tokyo, as the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, is Japan’s largest domestic and international hub for rail, ground, and air transportation. Public transportation within Tokyo is dominated by an extensive network of clean and efficient trains and subways run by a variety of operators, with buses, monorails and trams playing a secondary feeder role. Within Ōta, one of the 23 special wards, Haneda Airport offers domestic and international flights. Outside Tokyo, Narita International Airport, in Chiba Prefecture, is the major gateway for international travelers to Japan. Japan’s flag carrier Japan Airlines, as well as All Nippon Airways, Delta Air Lines,
and United Airlines all have a hub at this airport.
