Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. It lies off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and is 137 kilometers north of the equator. The country’s territory consists of the lozenge-shaped main island, commonly referred to as Singapore Island in English and Pulau Ujong in Malay, and more than 60 significantly smaller islets. Singapore is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the Straits of
Johor to the north and from Indonesia’s Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to the south. The country is highly urbanized, and little of the original vegetation remains. The country’s territory has consistently expanded through land reclamation.
Singapore is one of the world’s major commercial hubs, with the fourth-biggest financial centre and one of the five busiest ports. Its globalised and diversified economy depends heavily on trade, especially manufacturing, which represented 26 percent of Singapore’s GDP in 2005. NTU offers you the opportunity to join one of numerous student clubs and organizations, and
gives you an opportunity to improve yourself. Currently, there are more than 100 student
organizations in NTU. The Sports and Recreation Centre caters to the sporting and recreation
needs of the University Community. For NTU students, participation in competitive sports and
recreation activities form an integral part of University education. You’ll have the opportunity to choose between many indoor and outdoor activities. Also, there are many canteens on the campus where you can eat. As night falls, Singapore takes on another persona to offer students a vibrant array of nightlife and entertainment choices.
The Halls at NTU are home to some 9200 undergraduates. It is no secret that hall residents get so much more out of their undergraduate experience as compared to those who commute. They very quickly settle in to university life and become comfortable with the campus environment. NTU has 18 Halls of Residence, each with a capacity of between 500 & 659 residents. All halls are coed by floor or wing and offer single and double occupancy rooms. Double rooms are shared by residents of the same gender. Rooms are fully furnished. The halls of residence offer similarly styled accommodation.
Singapore is a great location for exploring Southeastern Asia. Overland travel by train and bus around Southeast Asia is an essential part of the experience. Taking the train is the safe, comfortable and adventurous way to travel overland between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang & Bangkok. Singapore to Kuala Lumpur takes 6 to 8 hours by train for appoximately 8 euros one-way. Other places to visit include Bali or a trip to central Java to visit Borobudor and Prambanam. You can also go on a trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia to visit the temples of Angkor.
